Motorola may have plans for premium phones with 5G connectivity and foldable phones in 2020, but it has one more deal left for 2019. The company is bringing its first smartphone with an all-screen design, the Motorola One Hyper to Americans for a mere $399.
The Motorola One Hyper is the latest in its growing One-series known for its mid-range affordable phones. While some have special camera capabilities like an extreme macro camera or a rotating action camera, this one boasts a lot of megapixels. “We’re going for that consumer that typically, they shop on Amazon for something that is great looking with great specs, and this will be the device for them,” says Doug Michau, head of product operations in Motorola. “There’s no carrier pre-loaded apps, it’s very clean Android.”
There is a dual-camera setup at the back consisting of a 64MP camera and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens that has a 118-field of view. You probably won’t find yourself using the 64MP images because of its huge size. Rather, you will use the high native resolution for lossless digital zoom or Hyper’s “quad pixel” binning to take 16MP images with better low-light performance. There is a 32MP pop-up camera on the front, the first in a Motorola smartphone featuring Night Vision mode.
You can view your media in the large 6.5 inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution and lacking any black bars, notch or hole. The display has an 85% screen-to-body ratio and a 19:9 aspect ratio. There is a fingerprint sensor at the rear while a ring of light around it lights up when you receive a message and alert. Users can customize these as per requirements.
Inside it’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 1TB via microSD card. It comes with Android 10 and backed by a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 45W ‘Hyper Charger’. However, the phone ships with an 18W fast charger and customers have to buy the 45W one separately. There is a water-repulsive coating but lacks any IP rating.
The Motorola One Hyper is currently available with Motorola.com, and not through any retailers or US carriers. The phone will initially be available in dark blue in the US followed by a dark red color later on. Michau said that devices like the One Hyper are coming to the US because of popular demand. He adds “Consumers wrote as asking for these devices. They see the hype, read the different tech reviews and we want to offer that option.”
